Programmes of Study and Entitlement

AS and A2 level

Most students will be expected to study four AS levels in Year 12 and to take an examination in each of them at the end of Year 12. Some students will be allowed to take only three subjects if this is considered more suitable for the individual concerned. In Year 13, most students will continue with three of the four subjects, taking them to full A level. Certain students will be allowed to continue with four subjects. In addition, all students will take General Studies at AS and A2 level, and some may also take Critical Thinking at AS level.

The following subjects are available at AS and A2.

For each AS subject, four hours a week will be timetabled. In addition, students will be expected to do another six hours work on each subject. They will also have an hour each week devoted to study support and another hour for the community programme. They must also attend a tutorial for guidance.

Most AS and A2 courses are modular. Three modules are examined in Year 12 and three in Year 13. In many subjects the modular exam will be taken as follows:

January - 1 module
June - 2 modules. AS completed.

Work on A2 modules will start in July

January - 1 module
June - 2 modules. A2 completed.

AS and A2 courses are described in detail later in this booklet.

GCSE

Students have the opportunity to resit GCSE English and Mathematics. Some other subjects may be available too, if there is sufficient demand.

Target setting and review

A target setting and review process with each student takes place in November and March. Target grades are set and modified, progress is reviewed and future plans made. Support will be given to those students failing to reach their target grades. Initial plans for subjects in Year 13 will be an additional focus for the March review as first module results, in many subjects, will be available then.
