Curriculum Content
Year 7
- Romans and their Empire: beginnings, key people, trade, religion, slavery, the army, technical achievements.
- Medieval Britain 1066-1500: Norman conquest, land, key figures, Church, war, farming, Parliament, population, social change.
Year 8
- Making of the UK 1500-1750: unification of Britain, relationship of Crown, Parliament and people, civil war, poverty.
- Britain 1750-circa 1900, agricultural and industrial change; improvements in transport; working conditions; political change; Victorianism; a local study of the Brick & Tile Industry in Barton.
Year 9
- Black peoples of America: the slave trade, plantation life, slave revolts, the struggle for equality.
- The Twentieth Century World: causes, types of warfare, military technology, effects on economy and society; emergence of dictators; causes of war in 1939; military technology; treatment of civilians; formation of United Nations.
Resources
Your child will work from a basic textbook supplemented with teacher-designed
worksheets, photographs, contemporary sources (copies of material which was
produced during the period of time which is being studied), video programmes
and computer software.
Teaching Methods
In all years pupils experience a variety of methods including written work;
oral discussion; group activities; the use of computer programs; creating
posters and brochures; simulation exercises; newspaper stories.
Skills and Knowledge
Your child will be encouraged to develop understanding in five key areas and
to show that understanding by referring to relevant events in the syllabus:
- explaining why events have occurred, and their consequences;
- identifying changes in attitudes between periods of time;
- understanding the attitudes and beliefs of people in other centuries;
- understanding why people have different opinions about History;
- judging the strengths and weaknesses of contemporary evidence.
