Curriculum Content
Pupils follow courses in English and English Literature. Courses cover the
National Curriculum Attainment Targets of Speaking and Listening, Reading and
Writing.
The course involves the study of Shakespeare, an anthology of poetry and short stories, pre-twentieth century literature, as well as modern works. There is work on Media and the development of original writing.
Teaching Methods
A variety of approaches is used depending on the activity. In speaking and listening tasks pupils engage in paired and small group work.There is formal, lecture-style teaching and the opportunity for pupils to work individually.
It is expected that pupils gain a sense of personal responsibility for their work.
Resources
There is a wide range of texts to support the courses. There is easy access to video and cassette recorders.Skills and Knowledge
The courses aim to develop pupils' communication skills and to foster an understanding and appreciation of Literature.Assessment
Pupils are entered for the AQA examinations in GCSE English and GCSE English Literature.
English: Coursework 40%

There are two entry 'tiers' - the Higher tier targets grades A* to D and the Foundation tier targets grades C to G.
