Curriculum Content
There is one Attainment Target in Art & Design. It sets out the knowledge,
skills and understanding that pupils are expected to have by the end of Key
Stage 3. The work that your child is asked to do is designed to cover this
Attainment Target and follows the National Curriculum for Key Stage 3 Art.
In Year 7, pupils complete three projects which are intended to help them to understand and apply the basic elements of artistic work and are all based around “The Portrait”.
In Year 8 your child will concentrate on two major areas of study. The first half of the year, pupils concentrate on work based on “Viewpoints”. The second half of the year looks at Metamorphosis and Distortion, with pupils working in clay and a wide range of 2D media.
In Year 9 all pupils in Art & Design work on graphics and commercial imagery. Pupils complete two major graphics projects.
Resources
Pupils are able to use: pencils, crayons, paints, printmaking equipment, ceramic and other materials, such as plaster, wire, card etc. for sculptural work. In addition, there are fine art postcards, books and posters to which they may refer. All coursework is backed up with the study of the work of other artists and designers. All pupils receive a sketch pad for use in and out of class. ICT is an integral part of the curriculum with access to a digital camera.Teaching Methods
Teaching methods used are varied in order to make sure that all the work laid down by the National Curriculum is covered. Sometimes the whole class will be taught at the same time; sometimes pupils will receive individual teaching; and sometimes the teacher may deal with a small group.Skills and Knowledge
The main aim of the course is to encourage your child to be confident and adventurous in the area of visual communication (Art) by providing opportunities for initiative and achievement. The skills your child will develop include:Intellectual Skills: communication, observation, reasoning, imagination, decision and action.
Physical Skills: observation, fine manipulation, presentation.
Social Skills: self-awareness, awareness of others, self-discipline, ability to discuss own work and the work of others.
