Enrichment

AS and A2 General Studies

Most students will have the opportunity to take AS and A2 in General Studies. This subject affords the students access to areas of study they might not otherwise touch upon.

AS and A2 Critical Thinking

This is available for the more able students, who will undertake the course on a self-study basis, with guidance from the Head of Sixth Form

English and Maths for Life

These are examined and certificated courses for those students who have been unsuccessful in their attempts to gain a C grade at GCSE

New CLAIT and New CLAIT Plus

These are basic IT qualifications, which will ensure that our students are computer literate. It is also something that employers recognise. It will also give our students a better chance of finding short-term employment if they go into Higher Education.

Careers guidance

All students in the Sixth Form are given thorough and ongoing advice from tutors and staff from the careers service. There is also a structured programme of help for those students entering Further or Higher Education.

Work experience

This now has to be undertaken during holiday time because of the large content of the AS and A2 exams. Help is given to ensure that students find a placement that is of real benefit to them.

The Community Programme

Each student is expected to give up one hour each week to contribute to the life of the school or the wider community. This can be very rewarding for the students, many of whom choose to work as a teacher's aide with younger pupils. Help is given to find a suitable placement.

Social activities

Many are arranged each year. Any student wishing to become involved in arranging these activities will be most welcome.

Young Enterprise

This is a national scheme, designed to build leadership and teamwork skills and to introduce young people to the world of commerce. Our teams have always enjoyed great success.

Corus Link Scheme

This is a very good introduction to life in industry and a good way to earn money! Past students who have won places have found it both interesting and beneficial.

The Airport Challenge

This is a recent innovation by the construction industry, which aims to build problem-solving skills. Our team won the regional trophy this year.

Travel abroad

Sixth Formers have priority on some of these visits, especially if they are of direct use to their programme of study

Snack machines

These are run by a group of students who have responsibility for ordering stock, filling the machines and banking the proceeds, which go to the Sixth Form Social Fund.

Connexions Card

This is a registration card that gives students points with which they can purchase some goods at lower prices at certain outlets around the region. It also allows them to bid for certain items on the Internet or to be entered into prize draws.
