Ofsted Report
Please find available for download, our Ofsted report from the June 2009 inspection. In addition to reading the report I hope you will take time to read these notes because the staff and I feel there are some very important considerations which do not fit into the brief format of an Ofsted report.
I want you to know we accept the overall judgement of the inspectors, which reflects our own evaluation submitted to Ofsted in advance of the inspection. Judgements in the various sections were satisfactory (grade 3), with pupils’ Personal Development and Well-Being graded good (2). Unfortunately, whilst the standards attained by pupils are satisfactory, their achievement and progress was judged to be unsatisfactory. Our GCSE results in 2008 were below national averages and we have been given a Notice to Improve (grade 4).
We agree with this verdict but are disappointed the inspectors did not take into account the starting point of last year’s cohort when they entered the school, which we felt to be a very important factor, and that our pleasing results from 2007 were not given more consideration.
We are delighted, however, that pupil Personal Development and Well-Being was judged good. The inspectors found our pupils
- feel safe
- are healthy
- make a positive contribution to school life
- know the difference between right and wrong, and
- their attendance is good.
This section of the report includes pupil behaviour, which has been a concern in the past, and we are delighted that the inspectors found the behaviour of our pupils to be good, and that they enjoy their education at Baysgarth.
The inspectors also acknowledged the significant staffing difficulties we have faced over the past two years and we are pleased they feel recent appointments and current tracking of our pupils’ progress mean the school’s results are likely to improve this summer. All our projections and results attained so far by our current Y9 and Y11 pupils strongly indicate they will achieve well. Consequently, we feel the school has come through a difficult phase, we now have the right staff in place and the inspectors feel we can make the necessary improvements.
We are proud of our pupils at Baysgarth. We are determined to build upon the good aspects of our school and are already addressing the areas of weakness highlighted in the report. The timing of the inspection means you will receive the report just before we break for the summer holidays, but if you have any issues arising from the report please do not hesitate to contact the school and one of my senior colleagues or I will be in touch as soon as possible.
