The Learning Resource Centre

Learning Resource Centre The Learning Resource Centre at Baysgarth School is a hive of activity. The fun begins at 8.30 in the morning when the doors open to a waiting mass of students, wanting to complete and print homework, and ends with the numerous afterschool activities which vary throughout the week.

The opening times of the Learning Resource Centre extend far beyond the boundaries of the normal school working day. We have played host to numerous unusual events such as the Year 10 Sponsored Stay Awake, which was held to raise funds for both the trip to China and for the LRC. We were able to purchase six beanbags to furnish our Quiet Reading Zone.

Learning Resource CentreA 'Murder in the Library' session was also held over two evenings for the new intake of year 7 students. Each team was given a series of forensic tests to carry out and a police report with book related clues and witness statements. They were required to solve the mystery and present their findings in an incident report The team that produced the most imaginative description won book prizes at the end of the evening.

We endeavour to offer a diverse agenda of activities in the LRC, and find that such diversity attracts a wide range of students whose interests vary from chess and scrabble to researching flight in the Dangerous Book Club.

We have recently introduced a paired reading scheme that many of the forms have been taking advantage of and for those who are unable to visit during registration book boxes are created for paired and quiet reading in the tutor groups.

We have also recently updated our OPAC (online public access catalogue) to a web based program that enables the students to search for resources from any computer, either in the school or remotely from home. Each year 7 pupil receives a minimum of two induction lessons in the LRC during which they will familiarise themselves with the software and the layout of the resources. They also complete an information literacy assessment that can be used to discover the students' strengths with their research skills and attitude to reading.

We hope to continually develop and update the resources available in the LRC; however, we do need sponsorship to effectively achieve this. We would like to thank Totalfina for their continued support in this area and would welcome any other companies or individuals who would also like to support us.
