Key Stage 4 Physical Education

PE

At Key Stage 4 all students take part in two hours of Core Physical Education but they also have the opportunity to take OCR Nationals as a double award GCSE level subject. This enables those with an enthusiasm for sport to study the theory behind performance and start down the pathway to a career in sport.

Curriculum Content

The KS4 Core Curriculum follows a similar path to the KS3 curriculum where a range of key processes are taught through a variety of sports. The KS4 curriculum has a greater focus on leadership, with all students having the opportunity to opt into the Baysgarth Sports Leadership Pathway (see below). Students get greater control over the sports that they choose in years 10 and 11, including more use of the leisure centre for activities such as Gym and Swimming. Students also have more access to external coaches, with Judo, Golf, Street Dance and a variety of other sports being taught by specialist coaches.

Baysgarth Leadership Pathway

Students at Baysgarth School are actively encouraged to take on leadership responsibility. This is encouraged through the Baysgarth Sports Leadership Pathway, an optional pathway that students can take in years 10 and 11. Students have the opportunity to take qualifications in Leadership and officiating such as; Sports Leaders Level 1, Badminton leaders, Dance Leaders, Junior Football Organisers and Netball Leaders. This will enable students to coach and lead younger students and their peers, and gives them increased independence over their learning.

OCR NATIONALS in SPORT

Curriculum Content

Students now study OCR Nationals in Sport at GCSE Level. This equates to two GCSE’s in Sport, awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level. OCR Nationals is a coursework and IT based course, where theoretical work is backed up with practical situations and leadership experience. Our OCR sport students currently study three modules; Health & Safety in Sport, The Sporting Environment and Sports Leadership.

Teaching Methods

Teaching styles vary from lesson to lesson and depending on the ability level of the group. Students may often work independently, as part of a pair or as part of a larger group. IT skills and a variety of assessment methods are used to assess students. Teachers often use skills such as video analysis and podcasting to add variety to lessons.

Skills and Knowledge

The practical activities within OCR Sport offer students the opportunity to back up their theoretical work with practical activities. These range from leading primary school students in Sports Leadership or bandaging in Health & Safety. The theory aspects of the course should give students an understanding of how sport and leisure is managed across the country, how health and safety impacts on sport and how to lead effectively.

Assessment

The three units are broken down into either five or six assessment objectives, each of which must be met to achieve a pass. The objectives are assessed in a variety of ways; written reports, presentations, practical activities, podcasts and a range of other methods are used. The course is 100% coursework based, with external moderators assessing final pieces of work.
