Under the National Curriculum four Attainment Targets (ATs) are covered:
A variety of teaching methods are used in this faculty. In Years 10 and 11 pupils follow the linear mathematics course from EDEXCEL. The faculty uses an interactive textbook to complement the course, and a wide variety of resources.
There are two levels of entry at GCSE and pupils follow a course suitable to their ability. Computer programs are used both within the courses and for remediation and enrichment.
The course enables pupils to become numerate, to apply the Mathematics learnt to solving problems both in Mathematics and other subjects, to present the solutions in the language of Mathematics in written work, diagrams and orally, to appreciate the power of Mathematics and to stimulate interest and the desire to find out.
Pupils will learn skills which include: communication; observation and collection of data; measurement; accuracy; data handling; computation - mental, written and calculator; reasoning and decision making.
Candidates are entered for the Mathematics (Linear), 1380 Specification offered by EDEXCEL.
Ongoing assessment is carried out through routine classwork, homework, formal tests and, more informally, by talking to pupils about their Mathematics. This enables us to enter pupils for the correct level at Key Stage 4.
There are 2 possible tiers of entry - Higher for grades A* to D and Foundation for grades C to G. There are 2 examinations at the end of a two year course, one calculator paper and one non-calculator. These are presently being started in Year 9 as their first year, hence sitting the first exam in Year 10. Thus giving us time to offer re-sit examinations if necessary. Those gaining C at Foundation level at the end of year 10 will then be given the opportunity to improve their grade by sitting the higher one year course. Those pupils achieving their predicted grades early, will be offered alternate provisions such the level 2 certificate in Further Mathematics. This is aimed at students achieving A and A* and likely to progress to A level.
This is available to provide an extra qualification for pupils working at the lower grades in GCSE.
The Learning Support department has worked closely and successfully with the Mathematics department in a partnership which has succeeded in raising the standards of pupils who might not otherwise have achieved their potential. By using one to one and team teaching techniques we have provided a flexible framework, adaptable to changing needs.
