German

Each student will have access to his/her own course book. We use a variety of teaching and learning styles, including pair and group work. There is a thriving exchange programme with a grammar school in Germany and Sixth Formers have priority on this.

AS and A2

We follow the AQA specifications.
Minimum entry requirement is a C at GCSE.
AS is taken at the end of Year 12, A2 at the end of Year 13.

AS Module 1: Young people today

Assessment: 90 minutes
Candidates have control of the cassette.
35% of AS, 17.5% of A2.

AS Module 2: Aspects of society

One essay chosen from the following topics:

  • Pollution, conservation and environment
  • Immigration and multiculturalism
  • Germany and Europe
  • The German-speaking world
  • Mass media

Assessment: 60 minutes
Writing
Students receive a preliminary material booklet at the beginning of the year.

AS Module 3: People and society

Based on the topic areas from Module 1 and one of the topics studied in Module 2

A2 Module 4: Contemporary issues

  • The state and the individual
  • Distribution of wealth

Listening, reading and writing
Candidates have control of cassette.

A2 Module 5: Coursework

Two 700 word essays on topics of personal interest, centred on the German-speaking world

Assessment:
15% of A2

A2 Module 6: Yesterday, today and tomorrow

Based on the topic areas from Module 4 and the coursework essays

Assessment: 35 minutes (including 20 minutes preparation time)
