In Key Stage 3 Drama, pupils work on developing and extending their personal and social skills, performance skills and improving their knowledge and understanding of drama and theatre. This involves pupils engaging in role play and improvisation whilst also learning about themselves, others and the world in which we live.
Most pupils are taught in the Drama Studio, which has a large floor area, motorised pull-out seating, some stage lighting, some audio equipment, tables and chairs and some text books. The greatest resource pupils have access to is the opportunity to be involved in Baysgarth Youth theatre and other extra-curricular dramatic activities which regularly take place in the school.
All pupils in Y7, Y8 and Y9 will receive one lesson per week. Group sizes vary from 20 – 30. During lessons pupils are encouraged to work as individuals, in pairs, in small groups and as a whole class and to discuss their own work and that of others.
Pupils learn about the use of dramatic conventions in order to improve performance skills and techniques and are provided with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of personal and social situations. Pupils will be able to demonstrate a good sense of how to interact with others in particular situations. Pupils will also be able to provide imaginative and thoughtful ideas during the planning stages of their work and carry them through successfully to their conclusion. The weaker pupil will demonstrate a basic understanding of the situation and will make some attempt to contribute to the tasks set enhancing their understanding and interpretation of given situations.
At the end of Y9, pupils should have a broad understanding of, and be able to appreciate, the arts, both in school and out in the wider community.
