3 Apr 2008 - Sporting Highlights: Jan-March 2008
Cross Country
Baysgarth took nine students to the country cross-country championships in January, the largest number for some time. The highlight was Nick Arnell in the senior boys who qualified for the country team, finishing in 8th place and going on to represent Humberside at the All England Schools Competition in Liverpool. Sam Derbyshire in Year 10 should also be mentioned as he finished in 14th place and was a non-travelling reserve for the county team.
Tennis
In the first North Lincolnshire Tennis Competition, Baysgarth came out victorious. The boys’ team of Ashley Collinson and Adam Blakey swept the opposition aside to claim victory. The girls’ team of Nicola Knapton and Rebecca Coleman were unbeaten up to the final, when they lost in a tight game to High Ridge.
Sports Partnership
The work of the Sports Partnership continues to try and get young people active and enjoying sport. Four students from Baysgarth were selected to represent North Lincolnshire at Sheffield Hallam University where they received sports leadership training. The students chosen to represent North Lincolnshire were Billy McNaught, Billy Wright, Nicola Knapton and Amy Spooner.
Over thirty Key Stage 4 Baysgarth students are currently involved in sports leadership training, which will enable them to run sports clubs and activities at lunch and after school.
Of the numerous sports festivals held this year, the highlight would have to be the indoor athletics. Teams of twenty from our partner primary schools competed in a wide range of indoor track and field events including javelin, standing long jump, spring hurdles and relay races. In the final, teams from all over North Lincolnshire came together to compete at Brigg Leisure Centre and it was one of Baysgarth’s partner primary schools that won. St Peters organised and trained by Miss Winney dominated the field events and did well enough on the track to hold on to victory. The event was so popular that Baysgarth is going to host the next event of this kind.
Boys’ FootballY7 boys remain undefeated (their lowest margin 5-1) and represent the school’s best chance of silverware. They have a semi-final against Huntcliffe after Easter. Jack Bowskin in Y7 is now playing for Scunthorpe United U12s, and Connor Hewitt, also in Y7, is playing for Doncaster U12s.
Years 8, 9 and 11 all reached the district quarter finals. The Y11 team also finished 3rd in the regional league. Y10 have the district plate semi-finals on 2 April – watch this space!
Girls’ FootballY7 girls started the season well, reaching the district quarter final. Laura Bartup from that year is playing for Hull Academy U12s. Y8 girls have been undefeated for two years now and are reigning district girls’ champions. Jasmine McNaught plays for the Doncaster Belles U13s. Years 9 & 10 have won the district friendly league, with Sophie Bartup selected to play for Hull Academy U14s.
HockeyThe Y8 team came 3rd in the Y9 district tournament – we have high hopes for them to win next year when they are against their own age group.
NetballBaysgarth has not previously been known for its netball prowess, but Mrs Hodge is doing a great job and teams are showing promise – and are even looking the part with their new kit. Y8s just missed out on a district semi-final place, but several players now play for the Brigg and District team.
6th FormThe 6th Form team were unlucky to lose their friendly match against the Brigg 6th Form, narrowly losing 1-0. However, revenge was sweet when Baysgarth returned victorious from the volleyball fixture!
